about

Part of a seven movement (unreleased) album entitled "The Hum of the World - Invisible City, a matter of place and time" - a series of field recordings and found sounds processed through GarageBand and Audacity.

The inspiration of the composition and the entire album is based on the opening four lines of a poem by T.S. Eliot, Little Gidding, Four Quartets:
"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time."

Throughout 2020, while in lockdown in New York City, I began to take long walks through the quiet, deserted streets and realized that after living here for over 30 years New York had become so familiar to me that I had forgotten what it was that drew me here in the first place. I began to explore and to see the city through fresh eyes once again as though for the first time. While on these adventures I began to record a number of sounds that started to return to the city as the pandemic lockdowns were lifted which became important elements of the music that had their basis in composition from a quote by John Cage, "All sound can be music".
