-Είναι κανείς εδώ; έκανε δισταχτικά ο Τζέσι.
Τη δεύτερη φορά που το είπε –πιο δυνατά– άκουσε κάτι από μέσα κι έπειτα είδε να ξεπροβάλει μια άσχημη γυναίκα με γκρίζα μαλλιά, καμιά πενηνταριά χρόνια στην πλάτη της κι άλλες τόσες τρίχες στο πάνω χείλος.
-Θέλω ένα δωμάτιο, της είπε
κι εκείνη δεν έδειξε κανένα τρομερό ενδιαφέρον γι’ αυτό, αλλά του έδωσε πάντως ένα κλειδί. Τώρα το θυμόταν ξεκάθαρα πως έτσι είχε γίνει
ενώ η βροχή δυνάμωνε πάλι
και τα τζάμια είχαν θαμπώσει. Ο Τζέσι χαμογέλασε και πυκνός καπνός βγήκε απ’ τα ρουθούνια του. Ο καπνός προσέκρουσε στο τζάμι, που απ’ την άλλη πλευρά του δεχόταν μια ανελέητη υγρή επίθεση. Όλ’ αυτά θύμιζαν μια φάρσα κι ο Τζέσι με δυσκολία κατάφερε να πνίξει έναν κόμπο γέλιου που λύθηκε στο στήθος του.
Δεν είχε λόγο –να τον πνίξει. Γι’ αυτό δυσκολεύτηκε. Έλειπε το κίνητρο.

-Anyone here? Jesse hesitantly went.
The second time he said it –louder– he heard something from inside and then saw a woman with grey hair, about fifty years on her back and as many hairs on her upper lip rear her ugly head.
-I want a room, he told her
and she showed no particular interest in that, but gave him a key anyway. Now he remembered clearly that’s how it had taken place
as the rain was growing stronger again
and the windows were all steamed up. Jesse smiled and thick smoke came out of his nostrils. The smoke hit against the glass pane, which was under a ruthless and humid attack on its other side. All this resembled some kind of prank and Jesse could barely repress a knot of laughter that got untied in his chest.
He had no reason to –repress it. That’s why it was hard. The motive was missing.
